Could it be achalasia? Help!

Hi there. Recently I've been having all kinds of throat problems. I am a teen. I went to my pediatrician and described my symptoms: dysphagia, feeling like food is stuck in my throat, a bit of difficulty breathing, especially taking deep breaths, no appetite, weight loss (14 pounds in 2-3 weeks) difficulty swallowing, and weird sounds throughout the day. Not just when I eat, almost like a really exaggerated mix between a hiccup and burp. But when I eat they seem to be at their worst. She sent me to the hospital for blood tests and a chest x-ray and they both came back perfect, no problems whatsoever. I just found out about this condition today and figured it fit my symptoms very closely. People who have achalasia, were your symptoms similar or identical to mine? Based on my description is it likely I  may have it? I know you guys aren't doctors. I am going to a ear, nose, and throat specialist on Monday, but I just need to calm my nerves a little and know what to possibly expect. Thank you for any responses and if you want more details please ask? Laughing (Sorry if this thread isn't allowed for some reason?)?

Histy, Achalasia is more an abdominal condition that in the throat or chest. It is caused when the sphincter muscle at the bottom of your oesophagus stops working. I was diagnosed in 2007 & treated by a procedure known as a myotomy. Main symptoms were severe stomach cramps & spasms, especially after eating; food getting stuck in my oesophagus & projectile vomitting when eating solid meals.; choking when lying in bed, as food stuck in my oesophagus regurgitated up into my lungs. I was unable to swallow things like bread, meat, potato, cake. I suggest you consult with a Gastroenterologist if you think you have Alchalasia. I understand your frustration. It took nearly 2 years til my condition was diagnosed, because we were looking in the wrong area & not many medicos were familiar with the condition. The Gastro / Abdominal medico's were into it almost immediately. All the best & hope you get it sorted real soon, Cherrs Rob E

Please keep trying to see what is wrong. My symptoms were food gettting stuck in esophagus and most often having to vomit to get it un stuck. I worrried it would close off and I would pass out. I lived alone at the time. Eventually it closed completely and I could'nt even swallow my own saliva. Had to have an endo to open it up. It was then the doctor recommended Heller Myotomy with partial funduplication. That was in 2006 and I have not had issue since.

I suffered for 10 years, went to many doctors until I finally got the correct diagnosis and it was corrected with surgery. Please try to find a surgeon familiar with the condition and experience performing he surgery. Even the nurses caring for me after said "what is it you had done" It is unusal, I was in emergency a few years later and the doctor there told me he had to look up the procedure as he had not heard of it.

My was not an abdominal condition. It was in my chest directly below my diaphram at the top of my stomach. I still get muscle spasms there somtimes and use a smooth muscle relaxer drug to calm them.

There is help, I starting feeling like it was all in my head, but after 10 years found help.

It sounds like you may have achalasia. My symptoms were: food getting stuck, initially just bread, nuts, apples and the like, but eventually even saliva. I would regurgitate and get relief. Also terrible hiccups.  I used a pill for awhile, smooth muscle relaxant,  eventually had a heller's myotomy. That was eight years ago and I am fine since. You need to see a GI doc, and have a scope to your upper GI tract. My first scope showed nothing, and I suffered for another two years. Good luck. There is a fabulous support group on yahoo BTW!

Achalasia is quite possible although the noises were not something I experienced.  FReya and  lndkeller  Answered you well. I hope the scope (endoscopy) does it for you.  If not the Heller myotomy is a rather simple surgery but get a surgeon who has done this before and who will not also do an unnecessary fundOplication.   Unfortunately my surgeon did a too tight fundoplication and now I cannot eat solid food at all and haven't since he sewed me up in 2007.
