My 9-year-old son Joshua has microphthalmia/phpv/blind left eye. He wears a prosthetic, and does not feel at all self-conscious about his eye.
I am also mother to Jonathon (8 years old) who has type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes.

Hi, my name is Robin. Iām from Escondido, Ca. My youngest son, Brice was born on April 17th with Micophthalmia of his right eye. I had never even heard of this condition prior to his birth. I am looking to educate myself on this condition so that I can make sure to ask the right questions & push for the right treatment for my son. Especially since when he was born he would not open the right eye & the nurses and ped md kept telling me this was normalā¦ but I knew something was wrong & finally got the diagnosis from the Ped Ophthamologist when he was 9 days old.

My granddaughter, Brently Blaise, who was born on 3-8-07, was diagnosed with micropthalmia of her left eye.
I am totally supportive of my son and daughter-in-law as they seek treatment for my beautiful granddaughter. The search for the best care, physicians and ocularist has been a family effort - the main person who helped to get Brently on the right path was my cousin, Cindy, who is a dedicated pediatric nurse.
She referred Brently to a great cranio-facial specialist who in turn told us about an equally wonderful ocularist.
It gave us great comfort to know that even though her eye will never be functional, prosthetics are available that can help stimulate the physical growth of her left orbit and give her the appearance of a normal eye.
This whole experience has made us all realize that we cannot take anything for granted. We recognize that there is a higher power, and that we must put our faith in God because he has a greater plan for Brently - she is truly a blessing from God.
