Been told that fundoplication may not work

I went to see the specialist last week and we discussed everything and he does feel that myotomy is the best route but he said that he doesn’t reccomend that I have the fundoplication b/c of my weight. He said that it most likely would only pull apart. Has anyone had the myotomy w/out the fundoplication? Did you develop severe reflux?

For my second myotomy the surgeon did not do a fundopulation as he thought it would tighten up with scar tissue. I have occasionally had acid reflux but i take 40mg of Omeprazole [a proton pump inhibitor] and it is not a major problem. For me i have more problems with secondary esophogitis caused by stagnant food not getting into my stomach!

Hi,

Yes I had a Heller Myotomy w/f wrap in 1999 I did have reflux and spasms. I had a redo in 2007 and they did not need to redo the wrap it was still in place.

I hope this helped you out.

Fundoplication can be very trick if you haven’t done very many of them. They can be either too tight and restict the flow into the stomach, or too loose and GERD can develope. Do you know how many myotomys your surgeon has done? IF it’s been less that 100, I’d find some one else for another opinion.

I’ve have both: 1997 transthorasic heller myotomy and 2007 laproscopic myotomy with a Dor fundoplication. The first one didn’t last long as it didn’t stop stomach acid from traveling up my E and I was always getting strictures. Since my last myotomy, swollowing isn’t a problem at all.

Best wishes,
