I have been diagnosed with IBS and GERD since 2001, I am now 32 years old. My symptoms are getting worse. I have constant chest pain, difficulty swallowing and burping, heartburn, constipation. I have tried several dietary and lifestyle changes. The only things I have found to help me are yoga, getting adequate sleep, gluten free diet and lots of fiber. I have been tested for Celiacs and was negative. I have an appointment with my GI specialist soon and I am going to request a barium swallow study. I think I may be suffering from achalasia. I know it is a rare disorder and I am learning more each day. I have some questions I was hoping others with the diagnosis might be able to shed some light on:
Is this a hereditary disorder because I have an aunt and grandma with similar symptoms?
Is it common to experience constipation with achalasia? I am wondering if I do have achalasia and I have surgery to correct it, will this help my lower GI symptoms as well? Anyone out there having similar issues?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post. I am a nurse so I really understand the value of having a strong support system for those with a chronic illness. This site is a great resource. Hope to hear from you=)
