ACTH - Plasma High

I’ve had Addison’s for about 3 years now and feel fine, I’m being treated with 2 x 10 mg generic hyrocortisone and generic 0.1 fludrocortisone, the GP just did a blood test for ACTH and it’s very high (about 30X normal) . Can anyone shed light on this? I feel fine otherwise. This test was taken in the morning about 1 hr after taking medication.

Thanks, Nick

I had this same problem. ACTH at these levels for too long could result in a pituitary gland tumor, so you want to get on it! My endo switched me from hydrocortisone to prednisone (longer half life) and instead of taking meds in the morning, I take them before bed. Apparently, ACTH is produced more at night than during the day, and if your levels of cortisol are strong at night, your ACTH will fall. Mine is now in the normal range.
