BD sores

Hi I am new to the Behcet’s family and just want to know does anyone else get the sores ( like the mouth and genital sores) in thier ears and nose? also any advice on what to do about them would be great.

Thanks for the advice, I forgot to ask but I get the sores under my fingernails and toenails to, my doc says there isn’t anythingshe can do for those do you have any advice about that?

An unfortunate welcome to the BD family. Yes, in
response to your question, along with the sores in the
mouth and genitals, I do get sores in my nose,
esophogus (sp?), but haven’t had any in my ears. I do
notice that the nasal sores take a very long time to
go away…some people say to let them dry out, but
that is very painful. I always keep some neosporin
w/pain relief, or zinc oxide, or vaseline on them.
When I blow my nose, I try to use baby wipes to get a
good “wet” clean. You could try the same remedies in
your ears, maybe the good old "cotton ball and oil"
would help keep them moist.

I’m very sorry you have them…as for genital sores
and mouth sores, here’s what I use. Mouth: ask your
doctor if she will prescribe some viscous xylocaine.
This is a clear gel the dentist uses to numb your
mouth for procedures. You can rub some on with a
finger or q-tip before eating. (I promise it’s not
strong enough to drool). You can also use this on
genital sores before/after using the bathroom or
inbetween, to help numb things while you take care of
business. Genital: Along with the xylocaine, I have
found a vaginal cream called “Vagiguard” in sensitive
and regular works the best. It has a pain relief
ingredient and aloe and vitamin E, and has good
staying power. Again, I always use baby wipes when I
get those sores. They’re alot gentler than TP!
Neosporin with pain relief CREAM works well too. Try
to stay away from “ointments” the clear greasy stuff,
they stain and don’t absorb into the skin.

Best of luck, if you have any good remedies, let me
know!

Thanks,

Jamie Wall

I’m so sorry, that seems not only painful but
extremely irritating. I know how a splinter under the
fingernail feels, and it’s horrible.

For those, you might try soaking your hands and feet
in an oatmeal bath. I know it sounds “hippie” or
wierd, but oatmeal has soothing chemical qualities to
it. Aveeno makes a very good one. I’m not sure what
epsom salt water would do, basically it’s more like a
saline solution, but I know it reduces inflamation and
swelling, which accompany sores.

Many people overlook ibuprofen as a pain reliver, but
it has more use reducing inflamation rather than pain
relief. With this disease, I’m not above trying almost
anything to stop the pain. Try going to a “health
food” store or “chinese herbal” shop. They’ve got all
kinds of stuff for soaks and wraps that really work
well.

You might also try some of the neosporin cream (not
sure if you can get it under your nails) but sleep
with thin cotton gloves or “footie” socks. I’m not
sure if your sores get infected easier as under
nailbeds are good places for bacteria.

I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help, I sincerely hope
you find something that works for you. I have found
that this disease treats everyone different, no two
cases are alike, nor respond to meds the same either.
Not sure what meds you’re on, but the only thing I
ever found that worked for me was Methotrexate. Humira
injections really helped too, but nothing else seemed
to.

Keep us posted, and be well.
