Behavioral Problems and MS

I have two first cousins who suffer from MS and I suffer from Sjogrens. Autoimmune disease seems to run in the family.

My question is, does MS have a severe impact psychologically – meaning does it cause or embellish emotional problems.

I know being sick with the disease can get you depressed but, I’m wondering does it cause other emotional problems?

Both my cousins have had emotional breakdowns and are hard to handle. The people taking care of them are having a difficult time with the mood swings and outrageous behavior.

Any takes on this matter?

I had heard that besides the emotional stress, some is neurological. Depending on where the scars are on the brain, you could have depression or emotional problems that are chemically caused.

Hi I’m responding to you privately…hope that is ok. I’m 48, and was dx’d
with MS in 2005. When I was 19, I was severly depressed and was hospitalized
for 21 mos in a psych hosp. In retrospect, it seems that might have been the
start of my MS. Depression is part of MS–not just being depressed with
having it, but depression is a symptom of MS. I have many mood swings, but
it is hard to tell what is MS and what is menopause.
best to you…
blessings, kate

I was put on Cymbalta for MS related depression. Cymbalta has smoothed out my emotions and it has the additional benifit of helping with leg pains and spasms. Cymbalta is usually given to diabteics, but it works for me.
