Obviously OJ Simpson is an N. Scott Peterson, definite N. My X-N reminds me so much of him, it’s scary. Don’t forget the rant that Alec Baldwin had with his daughter that became publicized. No one mentioned him as being a narcissist either. Any others?
I read somewhere that N’s can make the best actors…they have no sense of self, so putting on another persona comes naturally. Obviously, many are skilled in doing this in everyday life…but I get the impression that in the Hollywood crowd, the narcissists per capita would be much higher than in the general population. I know Cary Grant suffered from a disorder of self and some of his bios/books speak of his struggles.
Hey y’all’
let me add to this one something ‘our’ psychiatrist told me when he first started telling me and warning me about N.
EVERYONE, yes everyone has narcissistic traits, according to Freud and Morrisson, it is part of our childhood development. Some have more than others and some never develop further beyond the N. stage in our life.
The traits can be very useful, actors, teachers, therapists all have more of the traits than average Joe; it is those traits which makes them more succesful than others.
If you look deep (skindeep) into your own self, yor soul or psyche if you will, you can find part of the traits. Quite necessary at times, if not just for defense than maybe to get the promotion you deserve. The difference is that we do not loose track of our empathy and kindness. Our conscience has developped well; we know right from wrong and act upon it.
Maybe the ones among us that are/were able to be in a relationship w/ N’s, have a form of codependacy or some form of inverted N"?
He also gave my XN a book; called ‘The Productive Narcissist’ by Michael Maccoby. This was at the time that I still believed I could cure my XN!
One psychiatrist wrote somewhere that only 1% of the population actually suffers from NPD. I believe that number to be far greater. I believe also that our modern day society and upbringing of our kids (we have fewer, they are put on a pedestal, more spoilt) is producing more and more N’s every year. Check out Mr. Lasch book 'The Culture of Narcissism".
I have no sympathy for N’s, and when I was interviewed in Cali back when Scary Peterson (his parents lived in my town) was being convicted, I very happily told the reporters that I hoped they’d send him to the chair very quickly!
My NPD brother is an actor. I think because he is in an imaginary
world much of the time, realty is a bit more
than he can chew. He is extremely manipulative, for no reason at
all, and I feel very alientated from his life. He is
detached emotionally, which would seem ironic for an actor. He wants
it “ALL” on a silver platter as well. He does
work hard, but he feels that since he “GETS IN TOUCH” with "EMOTIONS"
that he is working harder than any other
human being. Meanwhile, the shlep work is for others to do and to be
disregarded.
