Chronic pancreatitis and antioxidant therapy

Hello- My husband treats with Dr. Steven Freedman @ Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston & he was recently told to start on antioxidant therapy which consists of the following:

Antioxidant therapy has been suggested in some studies to reduce pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis [23-25]. In the largest placebo-controlled trial, a total of 157 patients with chronic pancreatitis (either alcoholic or idiopathic) were randomly assigned to an antioxidant supplement (containing 600 micrograms of organic selenium, 0.54 g of ascorbic acid, 9000 IU of beta-carotene, and 270 IU of alpha-tocopherol and 2 g of methionine, Betamore, G, Osper Pharmaceutics, India) or placebo for six months [25]. At the end of the study, the intervention group experienced a significant reduction in the number of painful days per month and the number of analgesic tablets consumed. In addition, a significantly higher proportion of patients became pain free (32 versus 13 percent).

I want to know if anyone out there has tried the above therapy and if so where did you get the components & also has it helped your pain??

Desperate for any help that I can get for my hubby.

Thanks all!!!!

hey, I never tried this therapy but was wondering if your husband is a candidate for an islet cell transplant? It is an expensive surgical option but has worked really well for a good friend of mine who suffered with painful bouts of pancreatitis for many years. Best of luck to your husband.

I have never heard of this or tried it but I do hope you will share if you find anything more out. Thanks for the info. Sharon 54

When I first started seeing Dr. Chari at the Mayo Clinic approx. 11 years ago he suggested using antioxidant therapy and I did take a similar formula for several years. I got a very similar formulation from GNC so you might try GNC. I think it worked for me for a while but then my pain episodes began to escalate. Perhaps I should resume taking it since even after having the Whipple I have episodes of pain though I can deal with them at home for the most part. Let us know if you try it and get results.

Your husband is being treated by the BEST in the field of pancreatitis. I hope this treatment reduces the number of pain days for him. Along with the prescribed treatment, your constant support is vital to him.knowing Dr Freedman, if you have any hesitation or questions, he will be glad to speak with you about it. He is a very good MD and goes to bat for his patients every time.
