Colostomy closure?

Wednesday 6/25 was the ostomy closure, surgery went well but recovery is not going well this time. Two days post op he was allowed clears and has refused. Then his tummy began to swell and he began to vomit. So here we are 4 days post op and his tummy was pretty big and already needed rectal irrigation/disimpaction. He has been in a lot of pain and just not doing well. We are worried that maybe it was too soon for colostomy closure or maybe his colon just isn’t gonna work? He is now 5 (celebrated b-day yesterday) with late dx of SSHD, pullthru was done 5/7/08. My husband and I are already saying we want the stoma back…he did so well with his ostomy. He still hasn’t passed gas and is only smearing stool but they hear a ton of rumbles in his tummy.

oh man that really sucks!!! It’s so hard to see your child be in pain, it’s the worse. I hope soon he will start to heal and they figure out a treatment plan that works well for you guys.

my thoughts and wishes are with you.

We are finally home after 9 days from the colostomy closure.

Yesterday I was getting ready to do the irrigation myself with the help of the doctor and Tyler pulls his typical stalling method of I need to pee…fine the treatment room wasn’t ready so we let him go. Then he sat down on the potty and said he was gonna poo. And a few minutes later you can hear him yelling out the doctor’s name. We went in and low and behold he POOPED!!! And it was a good amount too (mainly liquid but hey it was a start). Everyone was so excited and proud of him and after an exam the doc said ok no irrigation today!

Later he did great and made a few more bm’s and the xray was clear and the doctor said it was ok to go home and try to get back to a normal life again. Woohoo, he is cleared to ride his bike…this is a huge deal to him he hasn’t been able to ride it since before May. So ++++ thoughts that his bowels will continue and that he will not have any further problems. We will follow up with doctor next week. It is possible we might still have to do irrigations but for now we don’t. Woohoo home just in time for the 4th of July.

That is great news!!! It’s amazing what they can do at that age and all that they learn, it’s gonna be so good to not worry about any problems w/ a bag.

My 1st born had a reversal at about 4 and 1/2 yrs old and had not pooped out of his butt since he was 8 months old and even he hardly did. I thought for sure I was going to have to potty training him, but no, eventhough he had never done it he had the concept of pooping and was on the potty from the 1st bm after surgery.

I hope your little one continues to do well and does not need irrigation.
