Confirmation of Achalasia

It was confirmed today that I have achalasia. I have an appt to sit down with the doc tomorrow to go over options, but basically I have a dilatation scheduled for Sept 1st, as I have a stricture near my LES.

Anyone get long term relief from the dilatation?

agreed Stay away from dilation and go for surgery

Depends on your age and ability to have surgery or not. Dilation is not felt to provide long term relief, surgery has become the gold standard.
In fact, starting with dilation may make surgery more difficult later on. I know, had surgery this spring, and spent a lot of time researching my options.

Way back in the 80’s when I was first diagnosed, I was given the option of surgery or dilation. It was explained that dilation may need to be repeated periodically and also that it may not work. I chose surgery which, back then, was much more complicated than it is now, and I’m sure glad I did. I believe the method they use nowadays is less invasive and the recovery time is quicker. I really have had no further problems since having the surgery… other than gaining 50 lbs!!
