Does anyone see a counselor

okay, I have been looking into getting a professional to talk to. I was wondering if anyone has seen or is seeing someone on a one-on-one basis and whether their therapies help or not. I have plenty of people to “talk” too. The other question I have is the cost. Does anyone here pay out of pocket and if you don’t mind sharing how much is reasonable. I have one who is $135 a 45min visit. That sounds a little steep unless we are getting a great deal done in those minutes. I don’t know, I may wait until I go back to school and its free to see those guys.

I see a therapist and it really does help. I have been seeing him for awhile and it’s comforting to talk to someone I really trust. My out of pocket cost is a lot less than that. I pay fifty bucks for a fourty five minute session.

does group therapy count? cuz i do that once a week…
james

All therapy counts - including what we are doing here by sharing and communicating

how much they make drum riff

Good one James, and true as well…

A psychiatrist (charges a lot more) sees you less often, and for a shorter amount of time, and is mainly in charge of prescribing your medications.

A therapist sees you more frequently, usually for an hour at a time, and frequently uses talk and behavioral therapy to help you.

Punkrockgirl, Thank you for the descriptions! If needed, I would opt for the therapist.

hi
i have sen 2 therapists and it helps a bit and it is expensive thats why i had to stop. but you can get school counsellors who are free.

I truly beleive that seeing someone is a must.  I've been to two different therapists, and looking for a new one.  I'm looking for a new one because i am uncomfortable with the one that i have right now.  *he is a male* i have a very hard time opening up to males but i thought that if i tried going to a male that maybe i would have less trouble with males.  not true in my case, i need to find a female to see because the first one i had really helped me out i could open up to her much more.  so finding a therapist isn't easy, but definetly worth it

I need to ask, what is the difference between a psyciatrist and a Therapist?

Therapists, in many ways, are more beneficial - I often find that psychiatrists are so clinical - I am a person, I like to be treated like one, not just some receptacle for pills! But each psychiatrist and therapist is different - some are great, and some not so great - and some can be a little frightening!!! But that’s very unusual.

I know I could not live with this vital part of my treatment, meds are one thing but if I didn’t have my Dr. to talk to every week or every 2 weeks I would be lost. It did take me a long time to find the right match 4 years and then I found one Dr who was great and then she left private practice but she placed me with this Dr and we have been a perfect match since day one. I have been with him for 7 years now. Keep trying the right therapist is out there for you. God Bless !

Hi Chalcedony!
I have been seeing theparists $90-$200 an hour, neurofeedback $250 and hour , Chaange program $500 just to start the program and other “specialists” since I was 12! Nothing seemed to work for me! I do see a therapist now, but she is more just to talk to. That is what I have found in therapists. Unless you find a real aggressive one and are clear about what you excpect from them then you are probably going to end up just having someone to talk to. The best advice I can give you is not to waste your money on someone just because you like them! Find someone who challanges you to change your behavior regarding anxiety or dpression and had information you have not heard before. Give them a few hours of your time, no more to make up your mind about them so you dont waste your time or money!
I know this sounds negative about therapists and it is not intended to. They have a purpose and are helpful to people who need someone unbiased to listen to what is going on and give them feedback, but for most of us that have suffered for any leangth of time they are usually telling us things we already know.
