Family History/children

Do any of you have a family history of Melanoma?

My mother was diagnosed with stage I almost 6 years ago and her father has basial skin cancer so in our family the chances are there. I was diagnosed June 9th 2006. And my oldest son who is 5 now was born with a congenital nevi (birth mole) which has a increaced chance of developing into melanoma with age. We have already had it removed.
For those of you with children how scared are you for your children now that you know what you know now about the damage the sun can do? Since in my case it was years of working and playing in the sun with out enough protection.

Hi Erica

Sorry to hear of the problems - I have two suggestions:

a/ DNA studies
Recommend that all your family volunteer DNA - that way if there is a
hereditary link, you may help them find a DNA based remedy

b/ focus now on diets and good health - those factors do make a difference
to when we die and what we die of

My personal belief is that moderate sun is actually good as long as it is
moderate:

-studies show that manual workers with regular sunshine exposure get less
cancer

-our bodies are naturally adjusted to seasons etc

  • vitamin D is good for you

BUT

-taking kids on holiday, especially in the winter and to places of high
sunshine, and then exposing them to mid-day sun (i.e. between 11 and 3)
without lashings of suncream every 20 minutes, puts their tender skin into
shock and can cause melanoma in later years

So be sensible but let them get regular and moderate sun - that is what
their bodies are built to use and adjust to

I have always made sure that I put sunscreen on my kids, but, now I’m even more careful about it. I worry about their chances of developing Melanoma, they are already at higher risk because of me, but, maybe if I do my part in making sure they are protected while out in the sun, it wont be as likely to happen, who knows. I just try to show them how important is to take sun precautions. I feel so bad when my patients bring their kids in and they have bad sunburns, if we could just get the info out to the children. I know they have seminars that will come to schools and educate kids on sun protection. Melanoma just isnt as important as other cancers or so it seems, it’s skin cancer awareness month and I havent heard one thing about it, really sad. People dont think it is life threatening, until they get it anyway. Take care.
