There is an article in this morning’s NY Times about food allergies.
Which reminds me that there was someone in another CFS group who did not
actually have CFS, but misdiagnosed celiac disease. All her problems with
fatigue were cured when she eliminated gluten from her diet.
Ten foods are responsible for over 90% of food allergies. The top ten
allergens are milk (dairy of all sorts including yogurt, cheese and butter), eggs,
nuts, soy, wheat, fish/shellfish, onions, corn, yeast, and citrus (some
sources also include tomatoes and white potatoes). Eliminate all of them for a
couple weeks, then add one back every few days to see if you react. MSG is
also a common allergen, so if you eat a lot of Chinese food, you’ll want to
stay away from that for a couple weeks to see if that helps. Don’t forget that
high fructose corn syrup is an ingredient in soda – while you’re trying the
elimination diet, stick to bottled water and herb tea.
The Stoff/Pellegrino book recommends the Caveman Diet: only fresh fruit,
fresh veggies, and fresh meat.
Personally, I discovered that changing my diet didn’t affect my health
noticeably; I’m allergic to the two things that I already knew I was allergic to.
Then again, my CFS started with a severe virus, so I was pretty sure it
wasn’t celiac disease even before I tried the various elimination diets in the
Stoff/Pellegrino book.
