HD in my second child or am I paranoid?

I have a 2 year old who was diagnosed at 20 days old with long segment hirschsprung’s and had her pull through surgery at 3 months old… now I have a new 8 week old little boy… we thought everything was fine when he was born; he passed his muconium plug the first day and pooped fine for the first week. Now he only go’s every 7 days and that is because on day 7 I’ll give him a supository. Nothing else (ie prune juice or sugar water) would help. Our family doctor says that bowel movements from 7 a day to 1 every 7 days is normal; but my husband and I are starting to wonder if he may also have hirschsprungs or are we just paranoid parents? Any advise?

I think it’s normal to feel this way and it wouldn’t hurt getting him tested to rule it out.

Set your mind at ease. If you can afford to have the tests done, go do them.
Don’t trust your pediatrician, go to the dr that treated your first child

Are you breastfeeding? It is normal for breastfed babies not to poop as frequently as formula fed babies. Breastfed babies can absorb ALL the nutrients of mom’s milk and therefore don’t poop. If he is distended, not eating, and lethargic I’d be worried.

When he poops with the suppository is it dry and difficult to pass? It is worth having him checked out but I’d be less concerned if you are breastfeeding.

It is normal for many babies to go so long w/out a poop, but w/ a hx of HD I would be freaked out too. If you can please have the child tested. It’s much better than there being a problems that goes undx and then you end up w/ enterocolitis or obstruction or something.

wishing you luck.

At 8 weeks of age, my DD’s tummy was distended and her poohs were EXPLOSIVE. If that’s the case for you, you may want to get the rectal biopsy taken.

Good luck, HC

Great News… my daughter’s surgeon was amazing and had no problem with doing the biopsy on our son since there were warning signs… and the test came back negative - no hirschsprung’s for our second child!!! They did a rectal enema and then the biopsy and since then he has been pooping every day… they think that there was just a kink in the intestine… we are soooo relieved

that is great news!
