Is President Bush a Narcissist?

If you read my book, you know my feelings on this subject. However, I feel the need to bring it up again in light of recent events.

Bush recently gave an address in which he repeatedly referred to himself in the third person…in my opinion; this is always a tell-tale sign of narcissism. I know it may seem harsh to suggest that Bush might be a narcissist. So let me clear on my position on this topic by including an excerpt from my book:

“Bill Maher, the brilliant host of Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO, recently suggested that Bush might be a paranoid schizophrenic. While I have never met the man and would never attempt to offer an explanation for his behavior, I would like to ask those who know him intimately if he might exhibit narcissistic tendencies? I think it is clear that he has delusions of grandeur. Whether he exhibits some of the other characteristics of a narcissist is not for me to say. He has only increased the terrorist’s hatred of us and hurt our foreign relations. Yet, despite all the evidence, he cannot admit when he is wrong.”

We need a president who respects our Constitution and remembers the words of Abraham Lincoln in his famous Gettysburg Address: “that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.” Our president ignores the polls and does not acknowledge the voice of the people on the subject of this war. We need a president who will listen to the people of the country he governs…not a president who is only into himself.

I have never met President Bush, so I really have no idea, and even though I personally cannot stand the man, I will happily defend with my life his right not to be remote diagnosed, online, by people who:

a) Have never met him
b) Haven’t got a clue about the real nature of the disorder they are trying to pin on him

I would agree that diagnosis someone would require interaction in a clinical setting by a trained medical professional. There are all sorts of conditions that can be attributed to somebodies behaviors. I don’t think I’ve been witness to enough that could be explained by normal human behavior. I have no doubt, however, that Narcissits get involved in politics. I knew one who was. I saw a guy get diagnosed NPD once for all sorts of bizarre behavior, and he really had sleep apnea. He had been deen deprived of so much sleep and oxygen at night he spent a lot of time being quite psychotic during the day. It is a shame people were so quick to place a label on him, but even the doctors missed it.

I used to enjoy having discussions about whether my cats were narcissitic.

My answer would be, “I don’t know.” (but my cats are, unless they have the apnea)
