Is sphincterectomy done during an ERCP?

Hello everyone,

I don’t know…Is a sphincterectomy done during an ERCP?

Vonnie

I just read the first page of postings and they are correct, a sphinctertotomy is done or can be done during an ERCP. I have had several - all with stent placements and I wish anyone a pain free procedure and quick recovery from this procedure.

Yes, sphincterotomy is done during the ERCP,

I JUST had mine done 2 weeks ago, and go back Sept 20th for the second part of the procedure called “Brushing”

they didnt tell me that there was 2 parts to this “surgery”, I have to say I was a bit disappointed to find out I had to go back, be put out again, so they can “brush” it…

now, I suppose everyone’s precedures are differnt… so be sure to ask them if ya have to do it in 2 parts or not…

I spent 3 days in the hospital for the firat part, and they tell me that the second part isn’t as bad, and I may only stay one day, unless of course my pancreas decides to be uncooperative…

we shall see…

Many Blessings

Yes, it is done during an ERCP–at least that is my experience. I did not have to go back for that-but the dr. put in stents too and I had to return 4 weeks later to have the stents removed. Betsy

Hey, Vonnie–

Yup, not sure if there are other ways to get at it, but this seems to be the least invasive since it’s like any endo that’s a little more specialized and can get to the pancreas and ducts. I’ve had about 4 sphincterotomies in the past year or so-- all done by ERCP. The ones to the pancreatic duct were much worse than the biliary duct as for post-op flares and sickness and pain-- but that’s just my experience.

All the best again!!!

I understand how it was done. I would be interested in knowing how it has worked for others. If you have an experience you would like to share I would appreciate it.

I found out that Dr. Chen is thinking that if the duct doens’t stop stricturing that he is thinking sending me to a surgeon for a Puestow. I know what that it, his assistant explained it to me. Right now my stnet is out and we on a trial period to see what happens w/o a stent. Thanks for all your replies.

Hi Vonnie,
My daughter (19) had the Puestow done last Oct. Any questions I can answer please let me know. That was a tough time for us but I’m glad she had it done-it truly seems to have helped. Good luck.

Mine was done about 3 weeks ago now, I believe there has been some relief, things seem to be “flowing” a little better, however, I have had to return to the hospital once since the procedure for pain, spasms, and nasuea, all controlled by pain meds and fluids…

I return Sept 20th for the brushing, hopefully at that time my angry organ will settle down and bit and be more agreeable…

it’s not a “painfree” procedure to be sure… but, hang in there, it does get better, Ice Chips are my friend during these procedures… the morphine I would like to do without… Ahhh well…

biggest issue now is that I am hungry but everything I eat seems to cause symptoms… I’ll still, 3 weeks out, trying to find food that doesnt set it off…

what do you eat when you have this procedure…

Man, How I wish I could have a piece of pizza… Ok, well, I’ll settle for something other than Jello and Broth… if not pizza…

seriously, I do think there is some relief… each day seems a bit better…

I’ll know more after Sept 20th… till then, its one day at a time… and enjoying each painfree and symptom free moments…

I wish you all the best as you travel this path…
