Meds and Weight Gain

Okay well reading all the replys to my “always feeling sick and scared” post Made me really consider taking meds.

So here’s my other problem. I am extremely self conscious. I’ve been dieting and working out ever since my baby was born so I could lose the weight. seems the only times I have felt “alright” in my life is when I am happy with my body. I’m worried because I have heard so much about people gaining weight from anti depressants and anti anxiety meds.

Is there a med that does NOT cause weight gain, or perhaps even causes weight loss? I really sdon’t know why they would make you gain weight. Do they actually change yoru metabolism or do they just make certain people who didn’t eat before cuz they were depressed or stressed eat like normal again?

Hi Bratina,
From all I have read, some people loose weight and some gain on anti
depressants. I too wonder if it’s just that they eat more. I don’t think it
changed my weight one way or the other.

I actually lost ten pounds when I was depressed, so gaining some back was a good thing. Your mental well-being is WAY more important than any weight loss or gain. If you happen to gain a little weight, try the South Beach Diet. It worked great for me, and I take three different medications for anxiety/depression. We’re here for you!

Well I gained weight… I use to workout all the time and never ate…But I had to decide do I wanna be skinny and sick or chubby and happy…I decided I would rather be chubby and happy!
But not all meds make you gain…And everyone is different so its a matter of what works best for you…

Good luck and I think your doing the right thing…

There are many meds that can have a side effect of weight change. It depends on the person what meds cause what effects because everyones chemical makeup is different. As I stated before, I highly recommend you have an evaluation by a psychiatrist and get your meds prescribed by them. Medical dpctprs only take a short class on the different medications for mental health. It is barely covered because they are not ment to be experts on that. Psychiatrists are. When you see whoever you choose to see, let them know all your concerns up front and that will help them decide which medications are best for you. I have been on a diet for about six months and I am losing very slowly. Part of the reason is that I sometimes fall off the wagon and eat things I should not. Part of the reason is that I take several medications. Still, the point is, I am on meds and losing weight. If you exercise and eat a healthy diet with correct portions you can keep your weight down. I agree with Bek, your mental state is much more importand than a few
pounds. And, if you get your mental state straightened out, you might not
even care if you gain a few pounds you’ll be feeling so much better!
