Muscle problems

I have been on prednisone for 10 yrs for addisons. I have recently developed extreme weakness in my legs. My dr.s feel that this is a side effect from the prednisone, but are currently ruling other causes out. Has anyone else developed muscle disorders from steroids?

Hi this is karen
i think themuscle weakness is due to the addisons not the steroids because i,v always had it even b4 i was diagnosed, i,m on hdrocortisone but was on pred 4 a year. Just my opinion though

I have at times felt this in my legs too. it is for me usually one of two things either low salt content/dehydration, or too little steroid. Try the salt first. Do you take fludricortisone?

I, TOO, HAVE MUSCLE PROBLEMS-----ESPECIALLY IN MY LEGS
AND UPPER ARMS. I HAVE FIBROMYALGIA, BUT I BELIEVE THE
MUSCLE PROBLEMS OCCUR WHEN MY POTASSIUM GETS LOW
OR I AM LOW ON SALT. I TAKE EXTRA POTASSIUM OR SALT, AND
THAT SEEMS TO HELP.

Yes electrolytes (salt and potassium) that are out of whack is definitely=
a
problem. I have fought with hypokalemia (low potassium) for about 5 year=
s
now. I take an obscene level of potassium daily that would probably
(seriously) kill a normal person. I also load on salt as high as the
cardiologist will allow (5G) plus whatever I eat which isn’t much in itse=
lf.
The muscle problems that I experienced with low potassium are a little
different than the problems I’m having now although they are similar for
sure. My neurologist originally diagnosed my muscle problems as hypokale=
mic
periodic paralysis but after several episodes the ER had documented norma=
l
potassium levels so we have to keep looking. They have suspected myasthe=
nia
gravis and a list as long as my arm but nothing concrete yet. I am in
terrible shape and getting worse as time passes. =0D

=46rom my experience the muscle symptoms of low potassium (at that point =
1.9)
were mostly heart related with a lot of just fatigue and flu like feeling=
s.=20
It took me 3 days to reach the 3.5 low end of normal and my doctors at th=
at
time were flabbergasted at the rate it wasted through me. When I go to a
new physician that hasn’t seen me before I am always questioned if my
potassium dose is a typo. One thing I can say is I hope I never have to =
be
infused with it again because it HURTS! I think my veins in that arm wer=
e
sore for a month or so. I’m not sure how to describe the subtle differen=
ces
but it’s more of a weakness that comes and goes. I’m weak all the time b=
ut
at various levels. It’s almost like they are someone else’s legs and the=
y
either react slowly and weak or in a few cases not at all.=0D
