My son just had his 9 month check up he is 19lbs 24.5 inches long, they seem really concerned about his height even thou neither I or his father is very tall. His weight gain is also very low, he won’t eat baby food or cereal. His doctor also said no juice, that will only make his stool stronger. Just curious if anyone has any advice for me.
Thanks again ladies for your helpful tips!
not sure about the weight gain and heighth issues, although my son’s drs always tell us as long as they are going up the scale some, not to worry abou the #'s…but the juice issue…my son has tchd and his gi dr has told us since day 1, nothing to drink but sports drinks and milk. We have lived by that. Zach will be 6 on Sunday. He is completely potty trained(has been since 3) and lives a “normal” healthy life…free of ANY juices or water. He has good stools and just knows that if he makes the choice to take a drink of juice or water, he will have diarreah. He doesn’t seem to mind at all. We tried juice for a while, and he got severe diarreah and rash. Every dr is different and every kid is different, but it works for us! Good luck! Zach’s mom!

forgot one other thing about the weight gain…when they were trying to “fatten” zach up for surgery, his drs had us putting a scoop of sugar free vanilla ice cream in every milk cup! crazy, but worked!!!

Well, I understand setbacks and all we can do is repair and move forward, sometimes we will never know why… Some things that worked with my son to get him to eat was to feed him in any place he would eat. The bath became his favorite place to eat, also the car seat, while we are driving, I give him a “snack bag” and he munches on our way back and forth to places. Also, pediasure is good and comes in both soy and mild bases. My son is still on 20 ounces of formula a day too and he is 2. The other thing was to keep trying new things consistently and try to make eating a fun and easy experience instead of something I was anxious about getting him to do… Hope those things help.
Truly,
Mary

I’m so glad you wrote this. My son is 10 months old and still gaining weight, but he’s moving down on the percentage scale. He’s gone steadily down from the 50th percentile to the 7th percentile. If he hits the 5th then we have to see the nutritionist at the Hospital. My son’s not a huge eater, especially when it comes to table food, and so far he only drinks formula. I’m trying to give him as many calories as I can during every meal while keeping up his fiber. It’s exhausting!! It’s nice to hear other people’s tips and tricks on what to do.
Check out the following link:
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/about/major/nhanes/growthcharts/charts.htm
Download and look at the “weight for length percentiles: boys, birth to 36 months”.
According to the CDC chart, your son appears fine. Perhaps you might consider sharing this chart with the Dr and they can explain to you whether this is an accurate guage of your son’s overall health. Also, height measurements of an infant are difficult to measure with any accuracy.

my daughter Anna is also very little petite, she is four, but the doctors say no worry she is healthy just littler. She does drink juice with no problems. She loves popscicles she loves gatorade and water. I was always told kids with hd need to drink alot more than the average child to keep hydrated. good luck.

My daughter is 9 month & just went for her check up. She weighs 15 lbs & has been having pooping problems since birth. She loves to eat but doesn’t seem to gain. I’ve thought it was connected all along but my doctor doesn’t seem to think so.
My son’s first surgeon tld us no juice as well, it was too irritating to the lining of the intestinal wall, esp. apple juice. I completely avoided it until he was about 4, then let him have small amts. but it did seems it wouldnt take much to give him diarreah. My son is also small, went thru several 6-8 month periods where I thought he’d never gain much, but he is steadily gainig (5 1/2 yr. old, 42#, 42 inches).
I have researched a fairly new product you may have heard about, Mona Vie. After watching it and researching it for over a yr., I decided to try it with my son. All these people were having amazing health benefits from it. My son has been drinking it for a short time now, but I have seen what appears to be improvements in his intestinal function. Some of you may want to research it to see if it is worth a try for your kids. Evidentally, it is a whole food, and “failure to thrive” babies in Brazil have thrived on nothing more than Acai berry juice for many yrs. (Acai berry is main ingredient in Mona Vie). Anyway, I like it enough that I bought into the company, became a distributor and can buy it wholesale now. I believe one site that has lots of info is called www.juicefacts.com .Best wishes to all fo you and blessings to your families.
where can I find more info about this juice you are talking about?
