When working with children who have ADD and ODD tendencies two of the biggest things to keep in mind is structure and consistency. The third is pick your battles. In other words, establish very clear and firm rules of the family, rules that all adults in the childs life are willing to remain consistant with, and make sure your son knows and understands what is expected of him within this structure. Remain consistant with consequences when he doesn’t comply, but try to even more often, catch him doing the right thig and praise him big for his accomplishments. He may sabatogue your attempt at saying anything positive about him by following up your statement with an inappropriate behavior. Just call him on it if he does it. Say, "You know I am aware that every time I tell you that you have done something well, you follow my statement with an unacceptable behavior or phrase. What do you suppose is behind all that? Maybe you might want to go sit quietly in your room for a little while and see if you can figure this out. When you have the answer you may come tell me."
Also, I do not know if you are familiar with Love and Logic Parenting Program, but it works very well for children who are in similar circumstances. The books, “Parenting With Love and Logic” and “Parenting Teens With Love and Logic,” are available online at Amazon.com and you can find the older editions used for a reasonable price.
In addition to these suggestions, do you know if you have any wrap around programs in your state? Any near to where you live? Wrap around services works like this. A child my go to an individual therapist at an office or have a mobile therapist come to the house to work with the child. In addition, there my be a Behavioral Specialist who assists the parents in writing a goal plan that the child, family, treatment team, and school will work together to implement. If that is not enough the child may also get approved for TSS hours. A TSS is a theraputic support staff and it is their job to be in the home between 5 to as many as 20 hours a week helping everyone to do their part and to try and assist the client in having success. I am a TSS worker in Pennsylvania and I work with children who have ODD, PDD NOS, ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, and any other number of disorders of childhood.
