Pain in Lipomas

Do lipomas caused by dercums hurt from the time they start to form or does the pain come after they are formed. I’m trying to figure out what I have, I just know the lipomas themselves are not painful. I do get pain in my ribcage, where the lipomas are, nothing severe though, and is usually while working. Thanks everyone for your help. Sorry for all the questions.

Mike,

Please don’t apologize for questions. Dercums disease is a very serious debilitating disease and you should be asking questions. Yes, Lipomas are very painful when they are growing. It itches, burns and then you get stabbing pain. Its very intense pain. It hurts when you push on them. My doctor told me there are 2 diseases that cause lipomas. Fibromilaygia and Dercums disease. The difference is Dercums lipomas a very painful because they grow on the nerve endings. We also have a lot of MS and Lupus symptoms. That is why its debilitating. Please let me know if you have more questions. ASK!!!

Linda

Hi Mike,

Linda answered you well, but there are diseases other than DD and fibromyalgia that cause lipomas. Madelungs Disease is one, and then there is Multiple Symmetrical Lipomatosis. There may be others. Try googling Diseases that cause Lipomas.

Pamela

If anything, mine hurt worse when they are new or forming.

Pamela

Thanks evgeryone for your responses. Just trying to figure out what’a going on in my body. I’m not sure I’m fitting the dercums profile, because the lipomas I have don’t hurt. I’ll start looking at Madelungs too.
Thanks,

Mike,

you might go to The Lipoma Forum for answers too.

hopefully this will reply to your question i had problems earlier. the lipoma in my arm have been there best part of 7 years they havent grown i never noticed them growing, they just appeared as if overnight. one was scanned in 2001 which confirmed lipoma. They became painful around 3 months ago that i noticed. I have had pain symptoms but always just put it down to my obesity,…thats my experience. Hope that helped!!

Pamela,

I was quoting my internist. He explained that lipomas and pain usually mean its narrowed down to those two main diseases. Even Dercums has several diseases attached to it. I am not a doctor, I am sorry if I offended you.

Linda

You did not offend me in any way, Linda! You were just quoting your doctor, which is exactly what I would have done if my doctor told me that. I just happen to know of several other fairly rare diseases that cause lipomas. I’m sure he is correct that it usually comes down to DD or Fibro. Just not always. I just wanted to let Mike know to research those too. Sorry if I offended you. I certainly didn’t mean to.

Mine started out with several non painful lipomas…I hardly noticed them but when I went for gall bladder surgery I had the Dr remove them…she said if they gave me any problems to come back but I didnt really have many more problems for 3 yrs …I started menopause and that must have jump started the DD…Ever since I can tell when a new one is coming and I have had alot of flare ups too where the ones I already have start to be so painful I have to stop what ever Im doing and lie down. I also have been okayed to take Tramadol every 6 hours as needed…
