Pancreatectomy and Auto-Islet Transplant

I had a pancreatectomy and auto-islet cell transplant in Dec 2006 and has anyone else had this transplant and if so have you had any problems post operation?

Hi,

I saw that you live in Arizona and that the Doctor who did your son’s surgery was coming here. I was wondering if you would tell me his name and the name of the hospital that he will be Chief of Surgery at.

Thank you,
Leanne

My son’s specialist is currently telling us this is the avenue for my son to take. Can you tell me how it has been so far? Have you had a reduction in pain? Were you diabetic at all prior to the procedures? How many hospitalizations did you have average per year prior to the procedure? There is a surgeon that is moving to our area (this coming July) that has performed these procedures and we are really interested in anyone that has had this done already.

hey my name is trevin ray and i had the islet transplant and im 18 years old and have pancreatitis my whole and that surgery worked wonders for me i have no pancreas pain at all but the surgery isnt much but its worth it i would do it over and over again and i wasnt a diabetic before but i am now its worth it. I had mine done at the university of minneasota by Dr. Sutherland he is the doctor that first did the surgery and he is amazing doctor but i was in the hospital about every 3 weeks for pain and now im pain free.

I have a website tiptopwebsite.com/trevinray and my email address is tray62@gmail.com i would love to speak to you and your son and help you out any way I can.

It takes about 6 months to totally recover from the surgery and the first 3 months aren’t that much fun but its all worth it in the end to be pain free and it was the only option i had because pain meds weren’t working at all and i had to quit school and all sports and i didn’t have a normal teen age life and it was hard because i thought i was alone because all my friends were just healthy and i was just alone going through it but now im recovering and actually you having a normal life and last weekend got to attend a high school prom which was a big step for me but please contact me ill do what ever i can

My son is 24 years old and had his first major attack at 18 years old. He was symptom free for 2 years then had another attack then went awhile up until just over 2 years ago when it became chronic. I totally understand your feeling of being alone - he has one friend that has stuck through this with him but now that friend is a daddy and although he comes around and calls alot it is very difficult as he is able to go hunting, shooting, fishing, work, play etc and my son can’t. Occasionally he feels well enough to go a couple miles and go target practice but then is usually down completely for a week afterward. His normal life is playing video games, watching tv and occasionally playing on the floor with his 2 year old son. He is on very high doses of pain medication and has had 18 hospital visits in the last 2 years. This isn’t a life but a sentence. I am absolutely thrilled to hear about your experience with this as the surgeon that did your procedure is moving from Minnesota to Arizona where we are. He is going to be Chief of Surgery at a hospital a few hours from our house. After hearing your story we now have hope as other surgeons in the valley have said that it is just a miserable situation and there is NOTHING they can do but control the pain or they want to send him to see a shrink as they think it is in his head even though we have all the medical reports showing he has a SERIOUS chronic illness. Thank you and Good luck with your continued improvement.
