I know how you feel! I suffer the same way and have now for 12 years and coming on to 13 on July 16.
The method for handling your diet is:
- Clear liquids for about three to four days. Make sure that you also get some electrolyte fluids to keep those in balance or you will pay dearly! Clear means just that: you can see through them. Jello, water, some of these new jazzed up flavored waters, etc. Stay away from carbonated drinks!
Doing this will let your stomach as well as your pancreas to “rest” and feel better.
-
When you feel better, move on to unclear liquids: chicken broth and stuff like that. These you can’t see through but will provide some nourishment.
-
If you feel better after a couple of days, move on to soft, easy foods to digest. You can even grind up your food i you need to help it along.
-
Now it is on to regular food. No more than 15% of your daily intake should be fat of any kind. Fat is VERY HARD on the pancreas. Other than that, you have to learn what you can or cannot tolerate as you go along. Myself, although diabetic as well, I don’t eat real meals (about 6) and keep them very small throughout the day.
I cannot say all of this without pointing out a MOST important thing. You must stay hydrated! 6-8 8oz. of water or other liquids all together in a day is a must to staying more healthy as dehydration is a terrible and common enemy to chronic pancreatitis sufferers!
Another point: get a doctor who specializes in pain management! GPs are not any good at this most of the time as they are afraid of being flagged by the FDA for overprescribing medications. A pain specialist is not under the same scrutiny as a GP. I suffered greatly for 10 years before I got a pain specialist. I was even listed as a “drug seeker” as well! Now I amon a Fentanyl patch system with 200 m c g per hour of medication every hour as long as I live. I also have dilaudid pills when the pain gets greater than what the patches can handle. When I go above that, it’s off to the ER!
Good luck and take good care,
Anyse
