Peptemen and Chronic Pancreatitis

My husband has been suffering with chronic pancreatitis for 2 years now. He had his gallbladder removed in 12/05 and afterwards was still in pain. In March 2006 he had a ERCP and they discovered his problem and corrected it and later that night he had his first attack of pancreatitis. He now has chronic pancreatitis.

Just last week we took a trip to see a gastroenterologist at Beth Israel Medical Deaconess Medical center. We are so excited and have renewed hope.

The doctor advised my husband to start drinking Peptemen (nutritional supplement) 3 times a day for 10 weeks and that he should notice a reduction in his pain. Has anyone else tried Peptemen? If so, please let us have some of your feedback in regards to this.

Sorry-I left out the most important part!!! You probably all thought I was nuts when I said the doctor told my hubby to start drinking----LOL!!!

Hi Karen,

I have J-tube and for the tube feedings I use Peptamen. It’s not oral
Peptamen and it doesn’t has the taste I think.
Before trying the tube feedings Peptamen they gave me to drink Peptamen
at the hospital to see whether I can tolerate it or not.
I think I did little bit ok with the first can on the first day, little
by little through out the day. Then when they started another Can
I couldn’t tolerate it so they asked me to stop. After few weeks when I
had very bad attack and I lost too much weight then
they decided to put the J-tube and start the feedings with Peptamen to
gain weight for my Whipple procedure. It did work out.
I gained weight and had my surgery. After surgery I tried supplements
like Ensure to recover but didn’t tolerate so I had to stick with the
tube feedings Peptamen again.

Everybody is different in receiving the medicines, having procedures,
taking supplements etc. I know it is going to work and he’ll start
feeling better within
a week. It’s good stuff and I hope he does well and everything goes
alright.
Good luck with the Peptamen.

:Lots of love and hugs,
Durga.

Hi Karen,

If your husband can tolerate the Peptamen, he’ll do well by it. When my weight was at it’s lowest with CP, after losing 30 pounds in two months, I was put on Peptamen. Unfortunately, after trying it several times over a two day period, I wasn’t able to tolerate it. It made me even more nauseous and made my pancreas disturbances even rougher than usual.

This is the formula that they use for tube feedings in the hospital, though, and can help with nutritional needs and weight gain if it’s tolerated. The substance is made up of medium chain triglycerides, which are predigested - so it’s really good for anyone with pancreatitis problems. Good luck with it, and I hope it works for him.
