Possible dialated bowel found in ultrasound

I’m currently 8 months pregnant with my second child. My first son has SSHD, he is 2.5 years old. He had is pull-through at 3 months and is doing well. He still has frequent bms and we are struggling with diet and when to start toilet training.

I recently had an ultrasound to check my amniotic fluid level with my current pregnancy. My fluid level is border line low - 10th percentile, last week it was 3rd percentile. I have had 4 ultrasounds in the last month to monitor my fluid levels. The doctor also noted that they found the baby’s bowel to be in the high end of normal in terms of dilation. Due to the fact I already have a son with HD and due to fact my fluid is low they are saying this MAY indicate some sort of bowel obstruction in the baby, however they are not sure and we won’t know until the baby is born.

I was wondering if anyone experienced a similar diagnosis when pregnant?

As i’m sure you understand we are extremely nervous that this baby may have HD or some other bowel issue. We have no other family history of this condition and are frustrated and scared we will have to go through this again.

Hello,

The radiologist noticed that my son’s bowel was dialated during my 32 week ultrasound. This is my only child so far and he is now 20 months. He did infact have HD, but I was in the same boat as far as not knowing what was wrong with his bowel. They sent me to a specialist and I kept getting ultra sounds to see if his bowel got any larger. In my case it did not. They wanted to induce me, but he came on his own 2 days before induction. Let me know if you have any questions, I am happy to answer them-

The good news is that my second son born in March did not have HD, unlike my first and contrary to what they noticed in the ultrasounds I had. We ended up having a barium enema xray on my son after he was born and everything seems to have developed properly.

My advice to any moms out there who are pregnant and have this diagnosis - please don’t get too worried (easier said than done, I know) because ultrasounds can be very inconclusive.

take care, Paula

Thanks for posting this update…I am expecting our second child in early February and I was planning to have the sonographer look for HD. How far along were you when they checked. With Chase I only had an 8 week and 5 month sonogram.

Either way we are prepared…I think part of why it was so difficult with Chase is because it was unexpected. Just out of curiosity- did you have any family history of HD prior to your first son? We have no family history but we weren’t planning my first pregnancy so I was on medication that could have caused birth defects. I’m trying to do everything right this time around because I still can’t shake the idea that the medication contributed to Chase’s HD. I’d be curious to know if any other mothers had a similar situation with their HD kiddos.

Hello~
I also am currently expecting our third child, my first one is fine, my second one Keegan has hd, which we also did not have a family history till he came along and I am now 29 weeks and having a boy and after reading the posts on here I asked to have an ultrasound done. When I got it we found out that his bowels look ok, but his stomach is measuring 3 weeks larger… So we don’t know… They said that very very few cases are detected by ultrasound, so we are taking all the precautions that this one will have it also. They are transferring my care and I will be delivering at the hospital my sons surgeon is at and I also gave them a heads up on what was going on.
