Short Bowel - Carbs

Hi,

My son has 24cm of small intestine and for the past year we’ve had issues with acidosis. We went to Boston earlier this year to have the STEP procedure but we found out that there wasn’t enough bowel to lengthen, so we are solving these issues with food. Are there any of you that have this problem? If so, what foods cause the biggest issues? Thanks!

Eileen,

My daughter is twenty and she has SBS. Acidosis has been a huge problem for her. I am going to give you her email. We find that reducing her carbs and watching her diet has been the best for this. She could be very helpful to you. Her email is wavyd37@msn.com. I am sure she can give you some help. She also went to boston and she had the step procedure. It has help somewhat but she still gets acidosis. Not as much.

Thanks \

Sandy

Eileen,

thank you! We have been eliminating carbs from Jules
diet and it has helped quite a bit but I have so many
questions for her. Thanks!

My son is 18 and has about 10inches of small intestines. He has been off TPN for about 7 months; however, he cannot gain any weight. He is 5’11" and weighs 110lbs. on a good day. He has alot of stomach discomfort…gurgling…pressure…
Any information on what has worked from other people would be appreciated. We are finding that his doctors tend to react to symptoms rather than being proactive in his quality of life.

My son is well alot younger but he struggles to gain weight as well. I was told that giving him complex carbs is the best way to go as for bulking on the weight, we give our son E028 Splash by Neocate. 1 drink box has 250cal and it is broken down so easy for digestion. Also have you looked into Duocal, its like 30cal a tblsp and can be added to everything. These are just the small ways to sneak in calories and well for my son who is 23months its easy on him.

I will definately look into your suggestions. Thank you. Also, my son started on the probiotic VSL#3 two months ago. It has helped tremendously with his stomache discomfort. Unfortunately, it is pricey and insurance is not covering it.
Also, to Sandy, I will give your daughter’s email to my son. He is 19 and it might be nice to connect with someone his age. I hope that is okay. If your daughter would like to contact him, his e-mail is jhud1608@yahoo.com.
His doctors have also mentioned doing the STEP procedure. It is very concerning due to the fact he only has 10 inches to work with…I would hate to risk the small amount of intestines he has left.
