Shoulder/neck pain in RA

I am taking Methotrexate (seeing Rheumatologist in 4 weeks again for review) not doing very well on this - pain still very bad - I have been told it can take 12 weeks to feel any benefit p- been taking it for 8 weeeksnow, plus Celebrex.

My shoulders/neck, wrists are giving me terrible problems, so much so that I have been unable to drive for 6 weeks now - cannot operate brake etc. Also sleeping is very bad - no matter what I do I cannot manage more than 2 hours per night in my bed - have to get up and walk around the pain is intolerable. I cannot turn over in bed, and can hardly get in/out of bed - in such a bad state. Has anyone any ideas please how I can help my pain. By the way - I also have RA in knees, feet, fingers and hips, not having a good time at all - feel like my life is coming to an end and only 59 years old

hands to control the truck in an emergency situation anymore. And when I
figure in the cost of insurance, gas, and upkeep…it’s really cheaper to
call a cab once a week or so to take me to the store, or the doctor’s
office, or to get my hair cut. That’s just about all the places I go these
days…except the library, and my Fred takes me there … so he can carry
all the books I check out…

Ardeith writes: You didn’t mention being on any pain meds…your doctor
can prescribe something to relieve the pain and let you sleep. Ask for
it…no, demand it. Lack of sleep just adds to the stress and makes
everything hurt even more. My doctor took me off Demerol and put me on
Hydroco/APAP 5-325M tablets. The scrip says I can take 1 or 2 tablets,
every four hours as needed…but I’ve never needed more than 2 tablets at
bedtime to let me sleep. If I know I’m going to have to be on my feet for
more than …oh, say 15 minutes, I take one about an hour
before…

Ardeith writes: Is your bed wide enough that you can roll over without
having to lift yourself and turn over in place? If not, maybe you could
get a wider bed. Trying to lift yourself to turn over in the same place is
hard on your arms, hands, and shoulders…as you know. Also, is your
difficulty getting out of the bed caused by the bed being very low?
Standing from a low chair, or bed, can be hard…can you put your bed on
risers? Bring it up high enough that it’s more like standing up from a
kitchen chair? I sleep on a twin sized bed…which is not really wide
enough to roll over on…but I drink a glass of water before going to bed,
which guarantees I’ll have to get up – sooner or later – and go to the
bathroom. When I get back in the bed, I lie on the other side…which
is all OK with me as staying in one position too long makes me stiffen and
ache anyway…

Ardeith writes: I’m 64, and I’ve had RA since I was 30. Your life isn’t
over, but it IS changed. Don’t let your mind get as stiff as your
joints…learn something new, maybe astronomy? Or geology? Or herbalism?
Learn a new craft…maybe painting? You can wrap the handles of paint
brushes with masking tape to make them fat enough you can hold them without
cramping your hands. Who cares how it looks if you can use them? I use
that trick on drawing pencils, and crochet hooks too…just have to
remember to mark them with what size they are.

Another thing you might not be aware of…changing barometric pressure
makes me ache…it might hurt you too. Every time a storm front moves
through, I feel it. Last night was uncomfortable…I gave up on sleeping,
and escaped to “Pern.” I know that won’t work for people who have to get up
and go to a job…but it helps me…

Lynda,

Do call your rheumatologist immediately. Have you been on prednisone at all. Perhaps some could be prescribed for you to help you get through this bad time. MTX will take some time. I never found that celebrex relieved the pain. May have reduced inflammation, but didn’t touch the pain. Prednisone will help for the short term. But you MUST let your doctor know what is happening to you right now. You should not have to suffer so much for so long or wait for the next appointment.

Will keep you in my prayers.

I just started Methotrexate myself about 2.5 month ago. I had it in my wrists, fingers, ankles and most of all, my knees. It took about 8 weeks, but the worst of the pain has subsided. Still very stiff in the morning, but much better during the day and I can sleep. My doc has me on Methotrexate along w/Plaquonil (sp?), which is a mild anti-inflamatory. The 2 seem to be working well for me. The only swelling I have left is in the knees and that has gone down considerably. Talk w/your doc about something for short term until the Methotrexate can get into your system.

Good luck to you!

Chris and Lynda,

I agree about the Celebrex; some Drs equate no swelling with no pain…it just isn’t so. Relief will come with prednisone. I can’t imagine your doc not agreeing to authorize it . You will also have relief quicker with prednisone.

Prednisone isn’t for everyone. It has caused major problems raising my
blood pressure and increasing my heart rate. I’ve just now finally taper=
ed
to 2.5 mgs per day from much higher doses over the last year. The high B=
P
and racing heart was causing big time problems with sleep and every day
functioning. I can’t say that I’d never take pednisone again but I will
consider other options first. =0D

Excellent point MylaJ. I thought of that and allergic reactions to prednisone which many people do have. Although I did find that I had some palpitations and difficulty sleeping if I tried doses in the range of 20mg ormore.

Hi all it’s Elvy,

i just came from my Doctor yesterday, remember that I live in Belize Central America, when the sun is not very hot it’s rainy, you guys out there i the states have rhuematologist, i see an internist, and i just told him that i do not want prednisone because it causes swelling, my face gets round, and i do not like it. i am only 36. a husband who is also 36 and a child who is my hero, only 5 yrs and i do cope. Each day people we must put God first. Please remember that he gave us his son because he love us and whoever believes in him shall have everlasting life. take care

I dont know anything about Belize ~ do you have pharmacies? ~ Can you get a hydroculator ~ this is a deep moist heating pad that you put in a pot of boiling water on the stove to heat it up ~ It certainly helped me ~ If you can get one ~ try it ~ I will look to see if I can find a picture of one ~
