i’m wondering how many of you are on assistance (ssi here in the states) and how many still work?
I'm on ssi and have been for 4 yrs now.. I was able to get it without much trouble when I first got out of the hosp...
Someone told me that its easier that way... But I don't know! I'm not able to hold down a job. I also have fibro and I might have a good day and do too much than be in bed for 3.. No one will hire you if can't be there !
I am presently in the process of waiting on a court date for SS Disability. I applied in 2005, was denied twice last year and have been in line for a court date since June 2006. It a long process. I can't hold down a job either. I've had about so many jobs over the past 30 years .. I can't even count them and quit working full time in Oct 2005. I worked one half day a week for a year and quit that Feb 2006. I just couldn't handle it anymore. I'd have a panic attack just getting dressed in the morning.
ittybitty, how long did it take for you to get SSDI? Did they approve you the first time around? For bipolar or what? If you don't mind me asking. :)
Whats ssi and ssdi stand for im from australia so not sure what that abbreviation means.
It’s the same thing, Social Security Disability Insurance - which is monthly disability payments from monies we’ve put into the government’s social security program. When you’re at retirement age or permanently disabled (if you’ve earned enough work credits), you get paid a certain amount of money for the rest of your life. The amount is based on how much you’ve put into the system as long as you worked. I hope that helps.
sounds like similar system to what we have in Australia but they are trying to promote self funded retirees now to cut back pension payments does affect me yet as am still able to work
Shah, what is the online hyno course? I, too, would like to write a book… links would be helpful. 
Before I got out of the hosp. they made me apply because I didn't have any insurance .. So we had to apply for that and medicaid.. I don't think it was 4 months later I got a check in the mail and I was afraid to cash it,I thought they made a mistake.. I called and a lady said I had been approved.. So I got back money even before the paper work came in the mail...I cried for days it was a gift from god...And I think at the time it was for depression and panic disorder...

i recieved disability allowance and invalidity benefit (U.K) since 2004 on and off. It starts small and now its ...less sml..lol! I want to work, but the people put me off. I get panicy just thinking of it now its been so long. The longest job i had was two yrs, 7yrs ago.
Im still doing my online hypnotherapy course, and im an A grader! Cool, (but it is an easy course). Im beginning an online writing course too... id love to write a book abt this disorder... abt living with it. Intimately!! But i will work for myself eventually. As a therapist and maybe a writer?
I can barely exist on this money?
I am on SSI. I would much rather be working, but am told that there is no way that I can work. I have a payee and everything. It makes me feel completely helpless.

Not very computer savvy sending links n stuff… sorry. Im doing a hypnotherapy course… how to hypnotise people, which ill use with my psychotherapy education for clients with probs. The course is by ''The College of Intergrated Therapies - Distance learning specialists. www.health-concern.com. Oh i see i did it? Lol!! Hope it helps. The book to get re writing befor beginning a course is called Personal Fiction Writing by M.S.Willis. Its inspiring and a great read.

After my stay in the hospital i was on family medical leave from my state job as an electrician, and collecting payroll protection insurance from the union for three months. I went back to work for three weeks then quit, couldn't stand the parrinoind feelings. the way people were treating me different. Drew out my state retirement to live on until i could find a job, apllied for dissability in june of 06. Took a job driving a dump truck for two months, until a better paying job at home depot came along. After two months they fired me for missing too much time, and my bipolar, but will never prove that. So i have been collecting unemployment since. My dissability has been turned down so i got a dissability lawyer to fight it for me. I have also been taking adult ed classes through the voc-rehab program, and as long as i go to school i can keep getting my unemployment, so i have been very lucky financialy that is, so i just take it one day at a time.
I also am bipolar and have chronic kidney failure and fibro, and a very bad back, with two disks gone, and one bulging. But I haven’t been able to quit work long enough to get on SSI; as my husb is already on SSI, so if I don’t work, we have a hard time getting by every month. He gets paid once a month, as you all know, and by the second week we are out of money for gas and food. So I work, because I don’t know how to get around it. I know I have enough physical problems to qualify, but I have to work. A lawyer told me he would take my case as soon as I stopped working. We live very simple, no car payments, no credit cards, and our rent is $315 a month, and we pay utilities. But it is hard to make it on what he gets for SSI. I don’t know what my answer to my dilema is. Do any of you? Ike/Bip
