Stomach and pancreas trouble and pain

I would like to know if there is anyone out there who share my symptoms. I have been suffering from acid reflux for a long time but two years ago I lost weight and began having stomach pain front and back. After many cat scans and MRCPs they found that my pancreas was enlarged. So far all I am taking is medication to stop the acid which can be uncontrollable at times. Of course that does not stop the stomach pain nor the pain in my pancreas through the back which can be excruciating at times. I have gained my weight back this past year but my symptoms are still there. I cannot find a doctor who specializes in this area who can give me a proper diagnosis. If anyone out there has experience this type of distress, please let me know what to do and where to get help. I will appreciate this very much.

hello again sufferer,

yes many experience what u discribe pain in belly that goes directly through to ur back and at times is excruciating to say the least. there are a few tests you can have to determine if what u are having is cp (chronic) which is a change to the pancreas itself what you have stated is that ur pancreas is enlarged which by my statndards (im not a doc) is yes the pain you are having is pancreatic pain. you did not mention if  they have rechecked your panreas after a bout did it return to normal. if so then i would think you are having acute attacks (chronic) if the pancreas did not return to normal then i would say you are cp.  you can have an ercp or eus done to look and see if any change has  happened. the ercp does and has the tendency to flare the pancreas and many do get an acute attack just by the procedure. the eus is relatively safe and does not have that risk.its also more definitive in diagnosing changes in the pancreas where as the ercp is more definitive for the ducts. hope this helps   nancy

Nancy what is a EUS? I thought I had all the tests possible but I have not heard of this or maybe not the abbriviation..

Sufferer,  Call or email the University of Cincinnati GI research center and ask them to recommend a doctor in you area.  I did that and they gave me the name of a wonderful doctor.  You can get them at ucpancreas.org.  I hope this helps.

Stacy, an EUS stands for endoscopic ultrasound.  Nancy is right- it has become the “gold standard” for determining if there are permanent changes to the pancreas.  She is also correct in saying that the ERCP has been known to cause an acute attack of panceratitis and is best for looking at the channels and ducts of the pancreas.  The only side effect that I noticed when I had my EUS done was a little soreness in the throat.
