Wanted to share this list of books that have helped me

Well, I went through heck just compiling it for something else (Ikept losing it!!! !ARGGGH!), so I thought, “why go through all that and stop there?? Why not share??”

I hope it can help someone else!

*Chronic Illness and the Twelve Steps: A Practical Approach to Spiritual Resilience by Martha Cleveland

*Peace in the Storm: Meditations on Chronic Pain and Illness by Maureen Pratt

*Finding the Joy in Today: Practical Readings for Living with Chronic Illness by Sefra Kobrin Pitzele

*A Delicate Balance: Living Successfully with Chronic Illness by Susan M. Wells (Not 12 Step based, but good)

*The Alternative 12-Steps: A Secular Guide to Recovery by Martha Cleveland, G. Arlys (Spiritual Principles to live by for the Agnostic or Atheist but very good-even if you are not either!)

*Peace in the Storm: Meditations on Chronic Pain and Illness - Maureen Pratt (not 12 step, but good)

*Mastering Pain: A Twelve Step Program for Coping With Chronic Pain by Richard Sternbach (probably the first book to suggest using the 12 steps on pain)

*The Life Recovery Bible: New Living Translation Version (Nlt) by David Stoop, Stephen Arterburn, A. Boyd Luter, and Connie Neal

*The Twelve Step Life Recovery Devotional by David A. Stoop and Stephen Arterburn

Some of the books are out of print, but shouldn’t be that hard to find with the World Wide Web!

Thank-you for the fortune of wisdom you have offerrd. Can you think of a twelve-step book for caregivers of chronic pain patients, or do I start with CODA?
Jill

I think CODA would be great for “live” support, absolutely. What some people don’t know is that anyone can attend open AA meetings, as well. I have met many who work other programs, but come to hear (listen) about the practice of the program as spoken in AA-or Alanon for that matter. Those options are open to you.

I am a firm believer in Googling- following whatever thread of thought enters your head. I didn’t find much just a minute ago on caregiving however, and have not the time to search at the moment but I will. Should I find anything, I’ll let you know. At least one looked good to me, but I have to check it out.

As for now, I can think of two tools immediately at your disposal. The first is to go to Hazelden.org. The have a feature you can access every day “Today’s Gift” that gives you daily meditations, “The Language of Letting Go” is one. But I bet you can find something in all of them. HOW? Tool number two- SUBSTITUTION. If something speaks to you, rewrite it in your head so that it applies to YOU. This is also available as a daliy email if you sign up. Little or no other email “spam” from them.

Message me anytime, be glad to help. Planning on betting a new hard drive, mine is infested and giving me fits- I am being externally accessed for some Spambots pleasure so I may not be available for a bit when I get it rebuilt. Dirty SOB has me emailing penis enlargement spam!! When it starts my PC freezes and crashes. I will be checking Careplace when I can.

HUGS, Phoenix

Thank you for the resources that you listed. I am a firm believer that my attitude makes a huge difference in my healing…as well as the culture of my home life. I look forward to finding some of those books. Wishing all a gentle day…Christina
