Weight loss

I have had 5 or 6 attacks in the last 6 years - hopefully no more.  They have all been bad - had to be hospitalized and in icu, etc.  The last one I developed blood clots right on one of my i.v. sites - another hospital stay, got home and it came back.  I had to have surgeries to take out clots and get the filters installed under lungs (twice because they took them out after the 1st swelling went down.  Then when I went back they had to do the same thing but left the filters in for good, thank goodness.  I started having severe back pain after one hospital bout back in 2004 or 05 and it hasn't gone away.  Is this common?  At first I just thought it was because I was in hosp. bed for over a week but it never went away even though I tried to exercise (hiking).

I try and stay on lo/no fat or fried food but I keep losing weight and my doctor doesn't know why.  Anybody been there?

 Thanks,

Free.

Free, the only thing that I can suggest is carbs, carbs, and more carbs.  Try eating breads, pasts, grains, and even sweets.  Anything that doesn’t trigger an attack and falls in that category might help you gain some of your weight back.

Thanks for your reply.  I drink a lot of coffee & about 1 soft drink a day (carbs).  I’m 44, 5’7 and weigh only 112 now.  I’m eating candy - I just don’t have that much of appetite - always have to bring home a ‘doggy bag’ if I go to restaraunt.  I went to a blood specialist due to my Protein C & S deficiency & found out I have a cardiovascular disease as well & was put on vit. B12 & 6 and folic acid - along with my blood thinners.  I have no energy and was fired from another job due to my hospital stays for the pancreatitis - I’ve had 3 or 4 last year.  They are coming closer together the older I get.  My doc wants me to start taking antidepressants but I’m too broke to afford these now & havn’t had any good experiences when I was on them back in 1999-2000.  I gained close to 35 pounds but that was before I was diagnosed with pancreatitis & after my first bout, that’s when the weight dropped.  My back is in constant pain and have to take meds for that too.  Getting old sucks!  Glad to be here with others that are going through the same thing.  I can’t hold a job down due to the cp, am single now cuz boyfriend of 4 years is tired of me being sick.  I hate to tell people what I have because I think they will assume the worst about me.

As far as diet,  I am trying to think ahead for the day.  What I will have for each meal.  I fix things that are easy to digest.  I make the meal and nibble on it until it is time to make the next meal.  This gives my stomach and pancreas plenty of time to digest the foods w/o overloading it.  When I do overload it hurts.  Lo fat helps a lot.  I too have trouble keeping on the weight, so now I am concentrating on getting enough nutrients.  I have ordered a juicer and am going to try making fresh juices every day to get nutrients.  Vegetable and fruit.  I also buy the Wal-mart brand of Ensure, put it in the blender with frozen fruit and 1/4 cup fat free plain yogurt mix it up and make a smoothie.  It is really good and also gives some nutrition. Also, I have decided that I need to make meals from scratch with fresh ingredients.

I am a Christian and have several prayer groups praying for me.  This is the biggest help of all.  I would encourage you to ask your friends and acquaintances for prayer.  God Bless you.  I will add you to my prayer list.

Barb…Hi,I am Sharina.I have been sick for 11 years.I am now 22.When I was 18 years old,I was 200lbs then, my pancrease slowed down and I lost 40lbs in 3 months. All together I have lost 80lbs due to my sickness. The docters don’t know what to do about anything in my body.lol.So far,I have kept my weight at the same number since I got out of the hospital for an attack in Jan.I have come to face the fact that I will be sick the rest of my life and really watch my weight.I now know to watch to see if I lose weight, my pancrease is messing up.I hope everything goes good for you.Have a nice day.

Mrs. Barb,

My goodness…doesn’t it always seem like bad news comes along just when you think things may finally go right?

Hang in there…I think if the heavens wanted you, they would have taken you by now. Please know I think you…I feel for your pain and anxiety…one day…on hour…hell, one minute at a time if you have to.

I’m here for you if you ever want to chat.
