Hi,

I’m new to this group and I i’ve been reading the threads and I see the name Dr. Petri come up alot in the post. I’d like to know more about him, does he have a website or a place were he can be contacted.

t/y Maria

Hi @Mery

Google the Monnell Institute or TMAU articles have links to him.

I just found out about this condition, mine is the more common strong garbage odor with a VERY acidic (Sharp?) overtone.

The first time I became aware of my odor problem was in starting college at 17 years old. I was lucky in the fact that I was home schooled from the fourth grade through high school. (I was beat up a few times too many and my teacher was accused of being a child perv) But I did not have to deal with the constant teasing that I’m sure most of you had. At least not until I was an adult!

I have had several jobs including the military (I just wanted to escape life… I still do) I tried to work at a full time job once as a bank teller, not only was my supervisor complaining to me about my odor almost every other day, but even the regular customers were avoiding me.

I have never had a problem with jobs, I was always the model employee working harder than everyone else. It never did any good.

The best job I had was working on a whale watching boat, the whales and dolphins and ocean smells (seagulls!) covered up my stink quite well. That is also why I like sailing as it gives me a chance at a few moments of normal socializing with other people.

The worst were the junior high - high school age kids, the will openly make comments about a horrible odor nearby, and you know they are talking about you! Most adults have the kindness (or fear) not to comment, and young kids don’t seem to care. (at least not to me)

I just want to find a job where it does not matter if I stink, I used to make ~30/hr but I was not happy. I would love a minimum wage if the odor did not matter. I have decided that happiness is more important than finances.

I have never dated anyone, and the number of friends I have ever had could be counted on both hands.

I have tried to escape from life (not suicide but as close as can be without death or permanent injury involved) 14 times now, and I never succeeded.

Talking about the heat problem I have always disliked temperatures above 50F, I start to sweat a lot and I get REALLY stinky! I even sleep with a fan on me to try to reduce the temperature as I am always too hot. When I touch someone else I can usually remark on how much colder they are.

I think I am about as depressed as can be, my money runs out next month (actually it ran out already but my credit cards are not quite full yet) and I will be forced back into the workplace that hates my odor so much. I would ALMOST rather die or disappear than go back to that enviroment.

Maybe I can find a job that does not involve working around other people.

Maybe…

I could keep writing forever, but no one wants to read forever.

Matt

@captinkid,

Your story was very sad. Thanks for sharing. I know what you mean about the junior high kids. Ouch!

Hello @captinkid

You can message me directly on my profile so I can give you the information for the company that I work for. I work from home, I make my own hours and I dont have to deal with the stress of co-workers sniffling near by.

I would be more that happy to give you all the info you need. And they are hiring. I know how you feel. i was originally doing my work from home job as a part time gig. Then I finally got to the point where I couldn’t take it anymore. And I quit the hotel

Kandyce

Hi @kandyce ,

I am new to this site and would also like some information on how to get a job working from home.

Thanks,
Amy

Matt,

Thanks for sharing. I’ve started to have problems in the work place as
well and because this things worsens with stress, I went to my doctor and
ask them to give me a note stating that they are investigating me for fish
odor syndrom and I got it. I took it to work and to be honest all the other
people I’ve support went with the majority in voicing thier thoughts about
my funk but the one seems to be pretty cool. I took the form to him this
week just in case he gets complaints about me, I could then file a formal
complaint with the company.

My case is a little different because I’m not sure what mine come from, a
medical mistake (which I’ve had, they hooked bladder and bowels up
incorrectly since a baby) just found out and almost 40. Parents did not
share information with thier children as they should. Just wondering if this
is related or a enzyme problem.

I understand you thoughts for I have prayed for death myself but because I
know that the is one of the things you can not get forgiveness for, it’s not
an option. I pray that you will find a position that will allow you to work
and be comfortable. Hang in there and be of good courage.

Penelope

I have mixed feelings. I am happy that I am not alone with this condition, however I am also sad that others have had to and are still going through this.

Thanks for all of your replies!

Matt

I hear you. Sometimes working in a warehouse setting, a laboratory or outdoors works out the best. Have you considered landscaping for someone?

Can you go back to fishing?

Joyce

I am very happy for you; I wish that a hormone imbalance was more common
because that is treatable. Did Dr. Preti find the imbalance or another type
of physician?

Joyce

Kathi,

You are a wealth of good information; the most helpful I have had. Thank
you very much. I am following up with Dr. Preti today.

Joyce

I did a lot of research because you’re kind of “on your own” with this
disorder. Preti is the man. Susan Tjoa at UC is great to work with. Good
luck.

To see Dr. Preti takes 6 to 12 months.

Hi, Kathi,

How did your doctor find your hormone imbalance?
What kind of blood test did your doctor ordered?

My daughter has all kinds of blood tests done,
including hormone. But all came back normal.
She releases TMA chemical in short time, really strong.
The rotton fishy odor can fill the entire room in a matter
of seconds. But she does not have smell at all in other times.
Right now, the incidents seem happen at random times.

Dr. Preti said he never seen a 12-year-girl starts
TMAU like this. There might be hormone triggered
metabolism disorder. We will also do the blood genotype soon.

We have had her taken choline challenging test.
5 grams choline did not do a trick on her. No smell
came out, none at all. But once in a while, she became
a TMA bomb. She is 12 (will be 13 soon).

Thanks!

  • The worried father.

I am so sorry about your daughter. In my annual pap exam, my doctor noticed
a problem and swabbed the area. My vagina was totally alkaline, and it must
be acidic to be healthy. She put me on hormone suppositories and boric acid
suppositories, and it helped clear it up.

However, the stress I was under at the time appears to be the real trigger.

I hope this helps. Has your daughter started her period?

I tried to e-mail you using the address provided below and also, I couln’t
bring up your internet location for your business. Could you send me
alternative details on your business site? Nothing is coming up but I am
very interested. Can you message me on my profile?

My doctor found it during an exam. I am postmenaposal, and there was a severe hormone imbalance. I was also working for the boss from hell. The two sparked my symptoms. However, there is no magical answer. Even though my hormone level is now balanced, I still have days when I smell fishy for no reason. I follow a diet of no fish or seafood, no meat or liver, no dairy, no whole grains, no legumes, no nuts except almonds and no soy. I take Derifil and use Sebamed to bathe. I shower twice a day. I brush my teeth and tongue 2 or 3 times a day.

Some days I’m fine and others there is an odor, but it is not nearly as strong as it used to be. Dr. Preti provided me with a letter that says there will be days when I will smell for no reason, and that is the frustrating part.

After I was tested by the University of Colorado, I faxed the results to Preti because he is affiliated with UC. He was very helpful in sending me a list of foods that denoted choline levels, and he provided me the letter of explanation of TMAU for any employer or other person to whom I needed to provide the information.

Good luck to you. When you get really low about the disorder think of others more unfortunate. I have two best friends diagnosed with breast cancer 12 months apart. I watched them go through surgery, chemo and radiation. I held their hand while they threw up and prepared the few foods they could eat. Compared to them and the fact they face a recurrent every day I feel blessed. Not necessarily joyful about TMAU, but I try to keep it in perspective.

If anyone is in the nc area please let me know
