Hi, I’ve been a member and the IBD group for a while, but never found this group before. I had been on Paxil for 6.5 yr. for bad anxiety and it worked great, until 5 weeks ago it just stopped working. I started Lexapro @ 10 mg. 10 days ago. My mind is doing a lot better, I guess the anxiety is better, I think, but I have been getting extremely nervous. Different than anxiety. Worse by the day, and yesterday was really bad. I have read that this can do this, and that you should stick with it, that it will pass, or lower your dose. I decided last night to lower to 5 mg. and see what happens. Has anybody taken Lexapro, or had an SSRI make you nervous, then it went away? I just hate the thought of having to try yet another drug, and go through all this all over again! I want this one to work. I know it hasn’t been very long yet. Thanks, Dawn <><

Hi Renee!
Wow sounds a lot like my issues with Lexapro. I was on Zoloft for about 8 years and then found that it was not working as well as it once did and switched to Lexapro. I found that although it wasn’t anxiety per say but like a constant nervous feeling. Which sometimes could aggrivate my anxiety. I stayed with it hoping too that it would pass and 8 months later switched back to zoloft.
What a diff the zoloft makes for me! I also have crohns and it helps with the cramp pains I get from that so works with all!
I would talk to your dr about trying something different. Well hope this helped!
~Kim
Hi Dawn,
I am glad that you have switched from the lexapro! Let me know how cybalta works for you:)
The zoloft works great, however I still have to take klonopin to help with the panic attacks. I should just up my zoloft and see if that makes a diff, but being back on the zoloft I am able to leave my house and go to the store, firends houses and live again! So yeas I would say it works for me. But it doesn’t work for everyone, your right.
Keep me posted on how things are going for you.
Hugs~Kim

I gained 36 lbs. on Lexapro. Was taking 20 then 30 mlg. Finally dropped to 10 by adding yet a different ssri and am fairly quickly and in a healthy way losing that weight. I am so grateful. I do go to 12 step for it, exercise and eat well slightly better than I was when I gained the weight. But I know lexapro was a huge part.
absolutely lets talk. I don’t have time this minute.
But it sure sounds like we have loads in common. I
truly believe that many of the roots of my
depression/anxiety are in my physical “issues.” And I
have had the same thought…who wouldn’t be
depressed. I ask myself which came first the chicken
or the egg…kind of thing. Thank you so much for
writing me and I will get back with you. Okay?

text below this line will be cut off in your replyI joined careplace, but haven’t really figured out
how it works. I am very
much interested in what other medication you added
to Lexapro that is helping
your lose weight. I have refused all
antidepressants except for Elavil and
I think I am addicted to it. Been on it for over 30
years. Doctors say I am
not addicted, but just dependent. I fall apart and
can’t sleep when I try
to get off of it. The doctors have no idea what
they are prescribing. They
have never taken it and only go on what the drug
companies salesmen tell them.
I gained 30 pounds on Elavil and another 10 before
I stopped Celexa. My
main problem is physical symptoms. I have so many
that I am depressed. They
seem to move around. Almost 20 different symptoms.
Doctor’s can’t seem to
find the answer, so they say I must be depressed.
Of course with 20 different
symptoms, who wouldn’t be depressed. I really don’t
know which came first,
but it is a horrible way to live.If you don’t mind, I would appreciate hearing from
you.************************************** See what’s

I believe Ativan is one of the gold standards for anxiety control. It works for some people at very low doses. You might want to see what your doctor thinks of the idea.
Isn't Ativan a Benzo?
I have used Klonopin and it works very well. I'm told it lasts longer than Xanax, and I tried a Xanax once and it did seem to wear off rather quickly.
<><
Yes, but I like it anyway. I have seen it work well for a lot of patients, and tolerance does not seem to build as quickly as with Xanax.
Wow, so did you move out of that apartment or what? That is terrible. How did you know what it was, I mean, how did you know it was formaldehyde? I want to pull all the carpet out of our house and put in tile, but it’s SOO expensive. I keep all the window open most of the time. The formaldehyde issue is something that concerns me. I tried to order a formaldehyde test kit, but it seems the company I ordered from must have gone out of business. I’ll have to find a new one. I’m very sensitive too.
I took Zithromax for a respiratory infection and it’s been 8 days since I stopped taking it and I’m still sick from it. The infection is long gone. The drug was worse than the illness!
How can you take so much/many anti-depressants? Are you just that tolerant to them? I didn’t know any person could take that many different things and at the standard dose to boot.
Dawn
Minnie,
Did you have anxiety too? Is the gluten free diet helping that?
Where you on meds?
Dawn <><
I have had anxiety at times. I am on a lot of meds, mostly for blood
pressure, sleep and Amitriptyline. I was given Amitriptyline for headaches, but I
have been on it now for over 40 years. No doubt it has taken its toll on my
memory. I’ve also gained a ton of weight which I can’t lose. I am on
Ambien to sleep and I am trying hard to get off of it, but I am going on vacation
and it makes it hard to stick to a Gluten free diet and also to sleep when I
am in a different bed.
The anxiety comes because I am unsure how to help myself. I haven’t gotten
any help from the doctors. I have been passed around like a pancake from one
specialist to another. I almost refuse to take any more anxiety or
antidepressant drugs. My experience with Amitriptyline, and the other
antidepressant drugs is they cause more problems than they get rid off. They are very
addictive. Pretty soon, you don’t know what symptom is coming from the drug or
the problems you had in the first place. The doctor’s don’t know enough
about these drugs and prescribe them because the drug companies representatives
tell them it is wonderful. I think the less drugs you take the better. I
have a stack of prescriptions given to me by my well intentioned primary
physician that I have never filled. I won’t take any drugs anymore unless I have a
particular disease they can substantiate with tests that the drugs will
control or help. Then I check out the drug on line with people who have taken it
for a long period of time and get their take on it. I think the physicians
might be well intentioned but they can lead you on the path of destruction.
I was told Amitriptyline was not habit forming 40 years ago. Some doctors
will still tell you that. I told my doctor, I have been on it 40 years and
have tried everything to get off of it. Then I ask him how long he has been
on it? He said, " I’ve never taken it," then I say, after 40 years on that
stuff listen to me. IT IS ADDICTIVE.
He got my point that the drug companies can tell you anything, but I’m not
agreeing with them. They want to sell drugs. I did find a physician at the
Mayo Clinic that told me the truth. If you have been on Amitriptyline for 40
years, it is almost impossible to get off. He said it is harder than Herione
to get off of. Now that doctor has done his research. This also holds true
for a lot of the newer drugs. I am taking Melatonin to help get my sleep
pattern back. It is an herb type medicine from the health store. I think you
should try health food stores and ask for their help. A lot of stores have
darn good personnel and might be able to suggest something more natural to
help with anxiety. Exercise is the best thing for anxiety. A real hard workout
that brings sweat. I can’t do that anymore because of arthritis, but I
would love too. Sounds like you are much younger than I am. I am 64 years old.
Diet may be the key. Different foods seem to cause anxiety, sugar is also
a major culprit along with gluten and beef. I suppose it is the hormones and
things they give the cow. Both of us should start a diary of what we have
eaten and how we feel afterwards. I know I should do that, but it is hard to
get in the habit. Also write down on the drugs so you will know and can tell
your physician what you have tried and how it made you feel. I am preaching
to myself as well. Take care and God Bless you. Your friend Minnie

Hi Renee, I don’t really have ‘something’ that I’m anxious about. My problem started after my son was born. I was anxious ALL the time, and couldn’t sleep for days. This went on for 6 months until I finally found a doc that said it was post partem depression. I told her I was not depressed. She said it can manifest as anxiety. I’ve always been a wound up person and prone to getting stressed out. She put my on the Paxil, and everything became fine. Over the years I’ve tried to wean off the Paxil 3 x, and each time it’s been the same. I’ll be fine for a month, then suddently all the anxiety comes back with a vengence. Last time I weaned off I went very slow, 5 months. When teh anxiety came back, which I was not expecting, I tried to stick it out, tried some natural remedies, but nothing helped. Then I tried Zoloft at the suggestion of a freind with the exact same problem. It didn’t work at all, so I went back on the Paxil. Paxil was a God send to me. I wish it was still working. I’ve been at the lowered dose fo 5 mg. of Lexapro for doses now, so a day and a half. I don’t feel so nervous this morning. The anxiety seems under control, it’s different that nervousness. Dawn <><
Hi Kim,
I tired Zoloft once and it didn't work for me at all. I stuck with it for a month, and went up to 100 mg. and it just did nothing. Like I wasn't even taking it. I was bummed, and I know several people who swear by it. So I went back on the Paxil. You have that feeling right. The Lexapro is not causing 'anxiety', but a contsant nervousness. I have it worse than you though, because I feel like I could climb out of my skin from it.
I did got to the doc today, and requested Cymabalta, which she gave me 3 weeks worth of samples. I hope the God this one is the right now.
So now that you went back to Zoloft, is it working well for you again?
Dawn <><
