I have been having extreme pain in my neck at the base of my skull…Does anyone else have this ? I wanted to know if its DD related…It sure hurts…I ttok my gabapentin and amtriptilyn(sp?) so Im off to bed (thats how I get to sleep for a little while at least…I am worried about my neck…The first time it happened I got up because I was soooo dizzy and wound up throwing up from the diziness…IThat doesnt happen so bad now…I just either get a headache or just feel dizzy…Hoping I can find someone else with this problem so I can say its DD related…
Yep! My neck kills me…has for many years…I had a neck x-ray about two weeks ago and have not heard anything. It spasyms if I excert myself at all or try to lift anything. It is too frozen to turn my head far enough to see behind me. The buffallo hump hurts all the time and I get these painless electrical shocks that go all the way up my neck they go on for hours. I have that most of the time. I have it right now. It is just off the left of my spine. I know one researcher about 10 years ago thought that fibromyalgia results from the nerve between the brain and the spine being compressed and he went in and opened it up for some people and they did not hurt anymore. I think he was in Canada but I forget. Wouldn’t that be nice if we could have a simple surgery to open up the nerve pathway and our pain goes away? I never heard more about it maybe I will research that when I get time! Sorry you are feeling bad EJohnson!!! Hugs, Grandma Sylvia
I don't have it at the base of my skull, but do have a neck pain on the right side of my neck - but that may just be from sleeping funny (one of my chihuahuas insists on sleeping in the bed on top of my head, haha, and I end up sleeping with my neck cocked to one side)
I looked it up and found this:
Pain at the base of the skull is common and can indicate that the nerves that exit the skull and the upper spine are being irritated or compressed. Any change in the ability to walk should be brought to the attention of your doctor. Feelings of tingling, weakness, or a loss of coordination can affect the arms or legs. Changes in bowel or bladder control such as incontinence or inability to urinate can also occur. Because the area of the spinal cord that is being affected is so high up, the changes in strength, balance, and sensation may vary and be difficult to interpret.
The info I found also says it is a "rheumatoid cervical spine problem"
I tried to see is there was anything on the web about it being connected to DD, but couldn't find anything (but that means nothing since there is so little on the web about DD anyway)
Hope you get some relief and feel better soon :)
I have pains that start on my occipital bone done to my shoulders… I have had them there for years. I was in a bad car accident years ago and after they said that I should have healed and the pain never went away. They told me that other than my vertebrae sitting on my spinal cord. My neck and shoulders burn ever day. It’s a deep pain.
Elaine,
I have been getting spasms in my neck lately, but I’m not sure it’s DD either. I think there may be something going on with my cervical spine.

Pamela
i often get pain in my lower skull, and across the shoulder, its excrutiating at time. I take painkillers for it, i believe its down to fibromyalgia especially with muscle spasms too. I often get dizzy because of it and feel woozy if thats how you spell it. I am in agony when it happens especially if i am at work.

I’m with you Christine, I have the hump and burning pain as well…I have been diagnosed with Cervical Disc Disease in C-5 and 6 and that one day I will wake up and not be able to move my head and at that time I will need surgery…The hump bothers me a lot and the burning combined with pins and needles and sometimes the deep pain that won’t stop. We are all so similar. I’m glad we are hanging in there together. love to all of you and loads of hugs. Bev
I have had head and neck problems since I was around fourteen, after I got knocked off a horse and hit my head against a tree branch. I think about it now it probably looked funny if anyone was watching but it didn’t feel funny at the time I was so mad I didn’t feel anything until I cooled off.
That was my first case of whiplash, after that I started having severe migrains and pain in between my shoulders. I had migrains for years after that until I was about 19 when I saw my first chiropractor, he helped me so much.
I have been in a couple of auto accidents since then and have herniated discs in my neck, thoracic and lumbar areas. I am definatly paying for all the fun things I did as a kid. I was the only girl with all boy cousins and I always had to keep up with them and out do them so I was always the one who got hurt. Including things like falling out a tree, once a rope broke when I was at the top and fell flat on my back, I was six when that happened. I was so scared of getting into trouble I wouldn’t tell my parents about it because Dad told me not to do it, I thought God was punishing me for disobeying Dad. Kids think the craziest things sometimes.
I have a really good therapuetic massage therapist who works the muscles in my neck. I don’t think I could move at all if it weren’t for him and my chiro.
I am lucky I didn’t end up paralized as much trouble as I used to get in to.
Hugs,
Brennie
The pain killers Im taking dont do anything for the pain…I am having severe pain today - base of skull, neck, shoulders and severe acid reflux…Im already on Tagamet but I have had to take extra to stop the acid…I am getting really tired of being sick…I had to tell my daughter to hurry up home and get these kids…I just cant stand too much anymore…They arent bad just too active and loud for me lately…I feel like a horrible
grandma
EJohnson…you raised your kids. You should not have to take care of the grandkids if you don’t feel up to it. There is a reason we have kids when we are young! I am sure that you are a wonderful grandmother. I am not up to babysitting all the time either. Relax and take care of you for a change. Hugs, Grandma Sylvia
Oh and Brennie…I bet you were a little stinker! From your picture I can just picture a little Brennie running around getting into trouble! Hugs, Grandma Sylvia
Oh Brennie, you had so much happen to you! It stinks that we pay later! My husband had a sport injury on his ankle. It healed and he went years with no pain, but now he has bad arthritis in that joint due to that old injury! We get older and it all comes back to bite us! No Fair!!!
Ejohnson, have you tried Prilosec for your acid reflux? I have a subscription for Omeprozole (same thing as the over the counter prilosec) and it has helped me tremendously!
No havent tried Prilosec…My PCP says that’s what the Tagamet is for and I just have to take one when I get the acid reflux…Its so confusing all the meds he has me taking PLUS what Dr Herbst recommends…
Hi im new here and i am awaiting an official (fingers crossed) diagnosis that i have DD so many years of wondering and waiting …any hows about the neck pain I too have this it is at the base of my skull where my head meets my neck and it feels like my head is too heavy, its like a sick migraine feeling but in my neck (dr thinks im mad)it also makes me feel kinda sick too and my head gets all spacey i really cant describe the feeling its such a strange one, somedays it is worse than others especially when the weather is cold and wet I have had this last flare up of it for almost a week now so i know what your going through…gentle hugs Cathy
Welcome Cathyd…So sorry that you may have DD. The neck is one of the worst DD areas. When it goes into spasyms it is unbearable. I have a special heating pad that you put in the microwave and it helps. My neck bones “pop” when I turn my head the limited amount that I can. I also have an exercise I was given at PT…you pull your chin in and hold it for a few seconds…Hugs, Grandma Sylvia
Hi and thanks for making me welcome I cant really do alot of exercise with my neck becuse have had the C2 fused with C1 and C3 becuse i broke my neck way back in 1985…and have very limited movement in it but i am trying to do the chin exercise as i am sitting here
Welcome Cathyd! Wow, no wonder your DD is going after your neck! That kind of previous trauma would attract it to your neck. Mine pops and crackles when I try to roll my neck and simply won’t roll when my head is back. I get that sensation you described too, like a migraine in my neck.
Hugs and spoons,
Pamela
Welcome Cathy,
You will find that there some amazing people in this group and I love them all. Its hard to talk about DD at first, at least it was for me. I always felt like all I did was complain about how bad I felt and whine whine and more whine but there is no other people and the world who will understand better than this group. We believe each other and we are here is spirit for each other.
Feel free for vent, we can take it!!!
Hugs,
Brennie
Well, I just pop my neck. I can twist my head almost all the way around!
It usually helps… My fiance also gives me massages. They help A LOT!
Also, try making sure your tv is at a good angle (or computer screen/ book/whatever you look at for 30minutes or more).
